Ingredients

  • Flour– ¾ cup of all purpose flour.
  • Sugar– ½ cup granulated.
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder – ⅕th cup about 3 tablespoons.
  • Baking Soda– ½ teaspoon
  • Vanilla Extract– 1 teaspoon
  • Milk- ½ cup. Can sub in water or buttermilk for a richer texture, depending on the taste you are looking for.
  • Vinegar white– ½ teaspoon (helps activate the baking soda).
  • Butter- 3 tablespoons melted.

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350. Prep your baking pan well for nonstick. Greasing and then flouring is one option for doing so. You could also use parchment paper, one of my favorite kitchen items.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder and baking soda. I actually prefer sifting my flour with the cocoa powder and then mixing the other ingredient into the bowl. Sifting allows for the flour and cocoa to blend together even better. This process is optional in this recipe however.
  • Next, in another bowl, stir together the vanilla extract, milk (or your substitute of choice), vinegar, and melted butter. Once these have blended together you can stir these wet ingredients into the dry ingredients in the first bowl.Be sure to scrape the sides of the bowl.
  • When the ingredients appear to be combined, you can transfer the batter into your prepped baking pans. Bake this for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool before frosting.

Recipe Notes

As mentioned, you will need a small, or two even smaller, baking pans for this recipe. You could use a standard square 8 by 8 inch size baking pan.
If you have a nine inch by two inch pan, usually round, that could work as well.
However, you may be someone wanting individual sized chocolate cakes.
There are 4 inch baking pans that you can find online that could work with this recipe. Another option would be to use a small cast iron skillet.Either individual pan option could work well in this recipe.
