OKAY, SO WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO MATCH OR COMPLIMENT WHEN IT COMES TO POPCORN ANYWAY?

  • Obviously, these days there are all kinds of flavors or popcorn. People sure do like to get creative with flavors and toppings for their popcorn.

There is a trick to pairing these multi flavored popcorn recipes by the way.

  • Take a bite out of the popcorn and note the flavor that you notice first. Then you can pair your wine to that flavor.

Notes

POPCORN AND WINE PAIRINGS

  • Plain popcorn- can be air popped or microwaved or even made on the stove! This popcorn totally deserves a light white wine that will not overtake the light taste of simply popcorn. Try a fruity flavor wine or light white wine. Good choices include Sauvignon blanc or a Chardonnay (avoid an oaked flavor wine).
  • Salted homemade popcorn. This popcorn is often made on the stove, in a popper or microwave. We are not adding any butter to it. We can play of the salty taste in salted popcorn. Try offsetting and complimenting the salted popcorn with a crisp or fruity wine such as a Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon blanc or a Chardonnay .
  • Buttered Popcorn- I am going to included the movie theater as well as the homemade with butter on top. Butter is the key flavor here. Having said that, there is a perfect wine for a butter taste, Chardonnay is a good choice for this. However, a sparkling rose, Pinot Noir or Pinot Grigio will also work here!
  • Caramel Corn. The perfect sweet popcorn flavor with a bit of a hard coating on it too. A sweet or less dry wine could work well here. A Moscato, Riesling, or Pinot Grigio may work well for you.
  • Cheesy Popcorn- usually this will be a cheddar kind of cheesy popcorn. Often this is a salty popcorn as well. A full bodied wine could work well here. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or even a Zinfandal could work here.
  • Chocolate Popcorn- we have all experimented with this idea as some time I think. Anyway, pair your chocolate covered with drizzles etc popcorn with-. Red wine is a nice choice from sweet to not so sweet. Cabernet Sauvignon, Pino Noir, or Merlot.
