Ingredients

  • All Purpose Flour– 2 cups. See above for alternatives that may be more friendly to your diet.
  • Baking Powder– 1 teaspoon.
  • Salt– 1 teaspoon.
  • Sugar– 1 ½ cups. Can sub in a granulated Sugar Alternative that measures 1:1 with sugar.
  • Vegan Unsweetened Cocoa Powder– ¾ cup
  • Water- 1 cup. Can sub in coffee to amp up your brownies!
  • Applesauce- 1 cup unsweetened. Can use vegan applesauce or you can find a recipe for sugar free applesauce here.
  • Oil- ¼ cup . Suitable oil choices include sunflower canola, peanut, avocado oil, or olive oil.
  • Vanilla Extract– 1 teaspoon
  • Chocolate Chips- 1 cup.
  • Please read the label on your chocolate chips to make sure that they are indeed vegan. You can find vegan chocolate chips here. Sugar Free diet followers can also use vegan sugar free chocolate chips in this recipe

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350 and prep an baking dish (9 X 13 works well) for nonstick.
  • In a medium mixing bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Next, in another medium mixing bowl, whisk or use a fork to mix together the sugar (or alternative) and the unsweetened cocoa.
  • Now, in a large mixing bowl, mix together the water, applesauce and oil. Then add to the large mixing bowl the flour mixture from the first bowl, stirring gently and then adding the cocoa and sugar mixture from the second bowl. Add the vanilla extract and mix until blended.
  • For adding the chocolate chips, there are two options . You can fold them into the batter or add half of the batter to the prepped baking dish, add the chocolate chips, and then add the remaining batter to the baking dish. The first option will evenly distribute the chips and the second will distribute the chips to the center of the brownies.
  • Bake for 26-30 minutes and allow to cool a bit before serving. A toothpick test will most likely not work in this recipe as the chocolate chips may thus give a false negative.

Recipe Notes

As mentioned, this recipe calls for all purpose flour. There are alternatives to all purpose flour that are suitable as well. However, you may need to make a few adjustments to balance out your other ingredients depending on the flour that you have chosen. Reading the label on the product can help you as can testing your baking.

If you are using a flour or sugar alternative use a product that measures 1:1 with the ingredient that you are replacing it with in order to keep the balance of ingredients intact.

Other vegan ingredients that you can use are vegan sugar or sugar alternativevegan unsweetened cocoa powder, and vegan applesauce. You can find a recipe for sugar free applesauce here.
