There is a way to make a Banana Wheat Flour Cake.
I must admit that it really is not a bad way to go as well.
Banana Wheat Flour Cake
This is a cake that in many ways like a bread.
I will explain a bit more about this in a moment.
This recipe does remind me of my popular Mediterranean Diet Friendly Cake.
Like with this cake, that cake is made with whole wheat flour.
However, this cake also has bananas in it which that one does not have.

You may be asking can you use wheat flour for cakes.
Well, yes you can use wheat flour for cakes but, you need to know how.
Many people are apprehensive about using wheat flour in a cake recipe because of the gluten in wheat flour.
Using wheat flour in cake is still possible to do however.
Because this cake is meant to be more dense, you could easily use whole wheat flour.
However, if you are looking for a cake that is not as dense, you can easily substitute in regular all purpose flour or even cake flour for half of the whole wheat flour.
I also want to mention what do bananas do in baking.
The bananas that are added to this cake recipe certainly have a purpose when it comes to adding flavor to this cake.
However, that is not the only purpose for adding bananas to this recipe.
The bananas that are added to this recipe also serve other purposes.
By adding bananas to this recipe we are able to cut down on the amount of eggs added.
Also, the bananas help keep this cake moist.
Tips for making this banana cake recipe.
I mentioned above that because we are using whole wheat flour, this will be a cake that is more dense than most cakes are. However, if you are looking for a cake that is not as dense, you can easily substitute in regular all purpose flour or even cake flour for half of the whole wheat flour.
Here are some more great tips for you.
- You can make this cake even more interesting by adding some chopped nuts. I like the idea of adding a half cup of chopped walnuts to this recipe for example.
- I know that I harp on this tip all of the time but, I do it for a good reason. Always use fresh ingredients especially when it comes to your dry ingredients, for best results.
- When combining the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients, resist the urge to over mix as this will make the cake even more dense, thanks to the whet flour gluten. Simply mix the ingredients until just blended.
- Make this cake into a bread instead. You can do this by adding an extra ½ cup of flour and adding two teaspoons of baking soda.
Also included in this recipe is a neutral oil.
This means that the oil will not add any substantial flavors (such as olive oil would add).
Acceptable neutral oils in the Mediterranean diet include avocado oil, safflower oil, and Grapeseed oil.

Some folks like to substitute applesauce for oil in a recipe such as this one.
Unsweetened apple sauce can be substituted for oil 1:1 in recipes.
However, you should be aware that it can affect the flavor of your cake.
This recipe does call for sugar.
Some people like to substitute an alternative for sugar in recipes. If you plan on doing so, I would recommend that you use a granular sugar alternative that measures 1:1 with sugar and that can be baked with as well. You may need to add an extra half tablespoon of oil as well to keep the moisture in the cake.
