This really is the perfect way to enjoy a mashed sweet potato on the Mediterranean diet.
Even better, these potatoes are sweetened with honey!

Did you try my recipe for Mediterranean Diet Roasted Potatoes?

That recipe is for roasted potatoes that do not have butter or other high fat ingredients added to them.
This recipe is similar in that aspect however, it features sweet potatoes rather than regular potatoes.

This recipe is especially for anyone asking how do you make mashed sweet potatoes.

Making mashed sweet potatoes is similar in some ways to making regular mashed potatoes.
That is, you cook or bake the potatoes and then mash them.

The big difference between the different mashed potatoes is in the ingredients that are added to them.

I like adding more savory ingredients such as garlic to my regular mashed potatoes.
But, when it comes to sweet potatoes, I can only think of honey and not garlic.

You may be wondering is it better to boil or bake sweet potatoes.

Both boiling sweet potatoes in water and baking sweet potatoes in the oven are good ways to get them cooked or baked before mashing. However, one problem that comes with the boiling method is that the sweet potatoes tend to absorb water which can affect your mashed sweet potatoes.

Here is how to microwave a sweet potato.

If you are really strapped for time, microwaving your potatoes is an option.
Simply pierce the potato a few times with a fork, place it on a microwave safe plate, and cook it for five minutes (or until tender- up to six minutes).

Tips for making mashed sweet potatoes.

I just mentioned that if you are pressed for time, microwaving your sweet potatoes is an option. Also, I prefer not to boil sweet potatoes for this recipe as they tend to absorb water which can affect the results of the mashed sweet potatoes.

Here are some more great tips for you.

  1. While this recipe tastes great with mashed sweet potatoes, you could add an additional vegetable to add some flavor or texture. I like the idea of adding a chopped carrot for example.
  2. While I have baked my potatoes with the skin on, you could easily peel your potatoes first and then cube the potatoes before baking. This will make it easier to go right to the mashing step after baking. I should note that keeping the skin on while baking will help hold on to the moisture.
  3. Adding extra ingredients to the mashed sweet potatoes before serving can be a fun idea. Chopped walnuts, drizzled maple syrup on top, or seasonings such as pumpkin pie spice are ideas.

How to bake sweet potatoes.

I am suggesting that you bake your potatoes and then allow them to cool before peeling.
However, another option which may work better if you are in a bind with preparing a large meal is to peel the potatoes, dice them into 1-2″ chunks, and then bake them (baking time will vary).

Here is how to bake sweet potatoes for this recipe.

Pierce each potato a few times with a fork and then place the potato on to a baking sheet.
Bake the potatoes at 375 for 90 minutes or until soft then allow them to cool before peeling.

Lastly, there are ways that you can mash these potatoes.

Using an old fashion, yet popular, potato masher is an option.
However, using a mixer is an easy option as well.
