This recipe for Yummy Vegan Black Bean Burger has totally changed my opinion on things.
For years I had avoided black beans having no idea what they are actually capable of- in this case, "yummy".
Yummy Vegan Black Bean Burger!
This recipe is especially for anyone who has given up beef but, misses eating a burger. I am certainly raising my hand here as I have been meat-free for a long time now.
The truth is, this black bean burger is actually pretty good, if not better than a usual burger.
Serve this burger up in your own homemade pita bread, such as this one, and you will know what I mean. Simply pile on the tomatoes or whatever you like to pile on to a burger.

Like me, you may have wondered what a black bean burger is made of.
Well, to make a long story short, black bean burgers are made from black beans. Well, and a few other ingredients including a binder such as an egg or avocado (vegan).
Since black beans may not taste so great all by themselves, we will add more flavorful ingredients.
Seasoning is important to this recipe for a vegan burger. Also, adding vegetables helps with not just the taste but the texture, color, and nutritional benefits of this burger.
Here is how to cook a black bean burger.
Assembling the ingredients is important as is cooking these babies.
The conventional way to make these black bean burgers is to 'fry' them in oil using a skillet.
These vegan black bean burgers can also be air fried.
I am a huge fan of my air fryer (Cuisinart). Because of that (and the reasons that I prefer an air fryer to actual frying), I make my black bean burgers in an air fryer.
Tips Yummy Vegan Black Bean Burger!
I just mentioned that this recipe can be made in a skillet using oil. Also, I mentioned my preferred way of making these burgers in an air fryer .
Here are some more great tips for you.
- This recipe calls for bread crumbs. Since this is a Mediterranean diet influenced site, this ingredients call for whole wheat bread crumbs, which you can find here. However, true vegans are welcome to sub in quinoa for the bread crumbs. The bread crumbs, or quinoa, are needed for both binding and for texture.
- Drying the beans out before adding them to the recipe will help keep the burgers hold their shape better. To dry beans out simply rinse and dry them. Then place them on to a baking sheet in an even layer at 375 for about eight minutes or until they appear to start splitting.
- This recipe also calls for broccoli. I get that not everyone likes broccoli as much as I do so feel free to sub in your favorite vegetable. Mushrooms, corn, and green beans are ideas.
Sometimes black bean burgers turn out mushy.
That is, they do not hold together and are better used as faux-taco meat for a taco or salad.
Mushy bean burgers can be minimized or avoided.

I have already mentioned the importance of using binders such as eggs, avocados, whole wheat bread crumbs and quinoa. Also mentioned is drying out your black beans before addding them to the recipe. Another idea is to form your patties and then refrigerate them for a half hour before cooking them.
Have you ever wondered how to serve up a vegan black bean burger?
You can serve your black bean burgers just like you would serve any other burger.
That means on a bun, with some veggies, and maybe with a bit of mustard or sauce on top.
I usually just cut mine up and toss them into my salad though. 🙂
