This recipe is for those of us who have always wondered How to Make Pita Bread at home.
I like that pita bread is easier to make than I would have ever thought it to be!

You may be surprised at how easy this recipe is to make compared to so many of the bread recipes that are available.
Yet, this pita bread is pretty tasty to east as well.

I like that this pita bread is so versatile to use.
Certainly, you could eat this pita bread just as it is. Perhaps you are like me and would enjoy it even better when it is just out of the oven. Mmmmm…the smell of freshly baked bread! 🙂

However, there is something to be said about making a pita bread sandwich.

This is because not only is this homemade bread yummy, it is also the perfect size.
By perfect size, I mean that pita bread is easy to hold in your hand while you pretty much devour it.

It really is a popular to eat Pita Bread as a pocket bread too.
Stuffing your pita bread with cheese or other ingredients is one way to enjoy it.
However, many people would also agree that some homemade hummus is the perfect match for pita bread no matter how you serve it up!

You may be surprised to learn that there is a rising agent that is used in this often referred to flat bread.

A traditional unleavened bread most often resembles a cracker. However, this bread does have a bit of a rise, or air, in it.

It is true that not all flat breads, such as the pita may be called, are unleavened.
But, consider your pita without its pocket to stuff your yummy chosen sandwich ingredients or burger into. It is the air, or the pocket, in pita bread that contributes to the enjoyment if eating it a lot of the time as you may agree.

Part of the simplicity of this recipe is the pita bread ingredients that are used.

The ingredients are basic and they all serve a purpose too. This is one kind of a bread that does not call for eggs or seasonings beyond a dash or so of salt.

Naturally, this recipe calls for all purpose flour.
However, you could sub in whole wheat flour for a portion of the all purpose flour. I have not tried subbing in the entire amount of all purpose flour with whole wheat flour.

This is really quick pita bread recipe to make.

However, you will need to allow the dough from this pita bread to rise. The rising process for this bread recipe takes about an hour and a half.

As mentioned, this recipe calls for using flour.
There are so many alternative flour choices available to choose from at the moment.

Naturally, this recipe calls for all purpose flour.
However, you could sub in whole wheat flour for a portion of the all purpose flour. I have not tried subbing in the entire amount of all purpose flour with whole wheat flour.

Here are the ingredients that you will need to make this easy recipe for Homemade Pita Bread.

  • Yeast– 1 packet (¾ ounce or 2 ¼ teaspoons) of Active Dry Yeast(not the quick or other kind of yeast).
  • Sugar– 1 teaspoon. The sugar is needed to help activate the yeast. Thus, sugar alternatives will not work for the rising needs of this recipe.
  • Water- 1 cup of warm tap water.
  • All Purpose Flour– 3 cups. We will divide this starting by using 2 ½ cups.
  • Salt- 1 teaspoon.
  • Olive Oil– 2 teaspoons.

How to Make Pita Bread

Pizza or similar stones work the best in the oven for baking this recipe. However, you could simply use a prepped baking sheet, although it may take a few extra minutes to make this. Using a cast iron skillet on the stove is another method for making pita bread.

Here is how to make the pita bread.

  • I use a mixing bowl, lightly sprayed with nonstick, that goes with my stand mixer to make dough. Then I outfit the stand mixer with a dough hook, also lightly sprayed with nonstick.
  • Also, lightly spray or oil a medium sized glass or similar bowl and set it aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, gently mix together the active yeast, sugar, and water. We will allow these ingredients to work together in order to activate the yeast. It should take about five minutes for the ingredients to begin to bubble.
  • Once the yeast mixture has begun to bubble, you can add 2 ½ cups of the flour to the mixing bowl. With the flour add the salt and olive oil. Mix this at a low speed using your dough hook until the dough begins to get soft. If the dough seems too sticky, as in it continues to stick to the sides of the bowl, add a small bit of flour at a time until you get that perfect soft dough. The dough should only slightly stick to your hands when it is ready.

Continue with this.

  • Alternatively, you can knead your dough by hand adding additional flour as needed. It should take about eight to nine minutes to achieve that perfect dough (soft and elastic).
  • Place the kneaded dough into the prepped bowl that you previously set aside. Cover lightly with a clean kitchen towel and allow the dough to rise until it doubles in size. It should take about an hour and a half to do so.
  • To make the pitas, preheat your oven to 450 and place the baking stone into the center of the oven or prep a baking sheet for nonstick. Punch the dough that was rising in the bowl down a couple of times then divide the dough in half. Divide each of the halves in half and then divide those in half as well. You should have eight pieces of dough.
  • Roll each piece of dough into a ball and then flatten the ball on to the prepped baking sheet or baking stone. As mentioned, pizza or similar stones work the best in the oven for baking this recipe. Bake for 2-3 minutes per side in the oven or on the stove on medium high setting (or longer on a baking sheet) or until the pita begins to puff and brown.
