I like that this is a Simple and Delicious Shepherd’s Salad recipe.

I call this salad a ‘celebration of fresh vegetables’ because I really believe that is it.
What I especially enjoy about this salad is that the ‘fresh’ vegetables that are ‘celebrated’ are fresh vegetables that I can easily find year round at my local grocery store.

I eat salad every day because I like them so much. It would be fair to say that I have tried about every kind of salad.

You may have wondered what is a Çoban Salatası, or Shepherd’s Salad?

To start, Çoban Salatası is the Turkish version of this salad. However, Shepherd’s Salad is quite popular all over the Mediterranean diet as well as in parts of the Middle East.

The typical Shepherd’s Salad features common vegetables that or rather ordinary as well.

Roma tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers are common in this delicious salad. The Shepherd’s Salad is usually tossed in a vinegarette and then topped with Feta cheese.

If you were to ask how can I make my salad better, I would say this.

Using fresh vegetables, such as the vegetables in Shepherd’s Salad, if the best way to make a salad better.
Fresh vegetables are not only tasty and healthy, they sure can make a salad look even better.

Of course, there are folks who are going to ask how do you make a salad not boring?

I can really relate to this question as I eat some kind of a salad every single day. To that question, I would say that it is all about how you personalize your salad with seasonings, a great dressing such as a vinagarette, and a bit of cheese such as feta on top.

I just mentioned that personalizing your salad makes it even better to enjoy. You can personalize your salad with seasonings, a great dressing such as a vinagarette, and a bit of cheese such as feta on top.

  1. This salad is best served just after making it. If you must make it ahead of time, I would suggest adding the tomatoes, dressing, and cheese just before serving it.
  2. While this salad is delicious on its own, you could make it part of the meal itself. Simply add some prepared tofu, chicken strips, or even salmon and you will have a great dish!
  3. The least amount of water introduced the better. This means making sure that your vegetables have been dried well after cleaning and using a firmer tomato. On a side note, seeds that come with the vegetables should also be kept at a minimum too.

While a Sheperd’s Salad has the same basic ingredients, in it no matter who is serving it, there are some variations that you can make to take yours up a notch. I did mention a moment ago that add seasonings or other variations are one way to make your salad more interesting.

Adding some fruit will not only add a new element of taste, but fruit will also add a bit of color, texture, and nutrition. Easy fruits to add to this salad include raisins or dried cranberries .

This salad can be made in a large salad bowl.

You can put the salad together and toss it in a large bowl. Then serve the salad into individual bowls for folks to enjoy.

Adding some fruit will not only add a new element of taste, but fruit will also add a bit of color, texture, and nutrition. Easy fruits to add to this salad include raisins or dried cranberries .

What you will need to make this recipe for Simple and Delicious Shepherd’s Salad

  • Roma Tomatoes- 1 pound. That is about three Roma tomatoes. Firm tomatoes are preferred as they contain less water and are more firm. Please prepare your Roma tomatoes by seeding them and then chopping them.
  • Cucumbers- 1 pound. This is about two large (such as burpless or dashing) cucumbers. To prepare the cucumbers, simply seed them and then chop them up. Peeling is optional.
  • Parsley- 1/2 cup using leaves that have been chopped off.
  • Red Onion- 1 small, chopped.
  • Vinegar- 1 tablespoons cider or red wine.
  • Olive Oil- 2 tablespoons.
  • Lemon Juice- 1 tablespoon (can omit and adjust vinegar to two tablespoons).
  • seasonings as desired. This can include Italian Seasonings, Salt, and/or Pepper.
  • Feta Cheese- 1/2-1 cup cubed or crumbled.
  • Optional- Peppers- seeded and chopped. Toss these in with the ingredients..
  • Optional- chopped black olives (1/2 cup).

How to make this Simple and Delicious Shepherd’s Salad

  • In a large salad bowl, place the tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley, and onion.
  • Next, in a small mixing bowl whisk together the vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice and any optional seasonings to make the dressing.
  • Toss the ingredients in the large bowl with the dressing. Top with the fet a cheese and any optional ingredients.
  • Allow to sit for 10-20 minutes and serve.
