You may be wondering what is the difference between stew and Irish stew.
Yes there is a 'difference' despite both ideas are for stew.
Technically, stew is what results when meats and vegetables are cooked in broth (usually slow cooked) until a gravy results.
A normal stew will usually be brown because of the meat that is added.
However, an Irish stew can be a lighter in color stew as mutton or lamb will be used instead of beef. Also, the 'secret' ingredient in Irish stew may be lager beer.
People ask what beer is good for stew.
Beer is added to the stew to give it a more hearty flavor.
This is why stout or porter or a similar dark beer is recommended.
Can you use an alternative to beer in your stew?
The alcohol in the beer is usually cooked off when it is added to stew.
However, you could sub in a nonalcoholic beer or even a red wine if needed.

Tips for making stew.
This recipe calls for tofu which is used instead of meat.
You can omit the tofu and add extra potatoes if desired.
Here are some more great tips for you.
- You can personalize your stew by adding a bit of molasses to sweeten it up. Another option is that you can also add brown sugar.
- Since this is a vegan stew you can add some beans. The beans can be substituted for the tofu as both a protein.
- This recipe calls for baby potatoes. However, large potatoes cut into chunks can be substituted for the baby potatoes.
How to serve vegan stew.
This stew is best when you serve it warm.
Also, this stew can be served as a meal in itself.
Serve this stew with a roll or sliced bread.
I like a nice vegan salad on the side with this stew.
