    What is Tapenade?

Originated in France, tapenade is a thick spread made by combining together olives, capers, and olive oil into a flavorful and chunky paste.

I like that tapenade can be spread on a slice of bread served as a dip with crackers or celery .

Have you tried my recipe for 5 Seed Crackers ?

Those crunchy crackers are made with flax, chia, sunflower, pumpkin, and sesame seeds. This tasty dip would go nicely when served with that crunchy crackers.

Capers are an important ingredients in the flavoring of this spread. You can find capers here.

Ingredients needed to make olive tapenade.

    • Garlic. Use a garlic clove that has been peeled and smashed (lightly crushed using the palm of your hand).
    • Capers. Brine-packed or salt-packed will bring extra flavor. Rinsing and draining the capers is a good idea to tame the flavor.
    • Lemon Juice. Use freshly squeezed lemon juice for the best flavor.
    • Olives. Your olives should be pitted.
    • Olive Oil. Use a good extra virgin olive oil for best results as this is used for texture and flavor in this recipe.
    • Optional Add-Ins basil, parsley, and anchovies.

Tips for making the best tapenade.

The olives that are used in this recipe serve as the base for both flavor and structure. Good choices of olives include Kalamata , Castelvetrano, Manzanilla, or a mix of olives.

    More helpful tips fo you,

    1. The capers are an important ingredient in tapenade as they bring a salty brine. Make sure that your capers have been drained, rinsed if needed, and roughly chopped as desired for texture.
    2. Using freshly squeezed lemon juice is preferred in this recipe. The lemon adds brightness and acidity to the tapenade which may not be as good with a bottled lemon lemon juice.
    3. To make your tapenade spicy you can add about a half teaspoon of calabrian chili paste red pepper flakes in step one of this recipe.
    4. Make your tapenade cheesy by adding a half cup of finely grated parmesan cheese or nutritional yeast in step two.
    5. You can make this recipe vegan by not adding the anchovies and using a vegan parmesan cheese or nutritional yeast.
