This is a meat-less burger that tastes amazing too!
This recipe can be made vegan as well as vegetarian as well.

Did you try my Grilled Garlic Tomato recipe?

That is another great tasting recipe that can be grilled and does not involve meat.
This recipe however, can easily replace the need for meat and still be filling.

This recipe is for anyone asking how do you you make mushroom burgers from scratch.

The first time that I tried a mushroom burger I was amazed at how delicious it tasted.
I did not even notice that this burger had no meat in it.

Perhaps a popular question is how to serve this burger up.

Yes, you can simply serve this burger just like you would serve any other burger, in a bun with the toppings.
However, serving this portobello burger without a bun is just as good in my opinion.

Another question that I get is how do you prepare a portobello mushroom.

Getting the mushroom ready for grilling may not be as hard to do as you may think it to be.
I like to start by using a paper towel to gently wipe done the cap (some folks will use a somewhat damp paper towel however, I am somewhat cautious about water around a mushroom).

What people always ask about is if the gills on the inside of the mushroom cap can be eaten.

Start by gently twisting the stem off of the mushroom and then using a spoon to scoop out the gills.
While the gills could be eaten, they are messy, do not taste great, and take up space on the inside of the mushroom that is needed for other ingredients in a recipe such as this one.

Tips for making a mushroom burger.

I just mentioned that it is a good idea to wipe the cap of the mushroom down with a paper towel.
Also, turn the mushroom upside down and twist out the stem. Then you can scoop out the gills from inside the mushroom cap.

Here are some more great tips for you.

  1. Here is how to store the portobello mushrooms when you bring them home from the store and before you use them. Remove the mushrooms from their original packaging and loosely wrap them in a few paper towels. These mushrooms need air which means they will stay best in a paper bag or what I use, vented storage containers.
  2. Since these burgers cook quickly on the grill, I suggest having your other ingredients handy if you plan on assembling your portobello mushroom burgers immediately after grilling them.
  3. Certainly this recipe can easily be made in the oven instead of on the grill. Simply place the prepared mushroom on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake at 400 for 10-12 minutes.

So you may be wondering what does Caprese actually mean in cooking.

Caprese is commonly known as a popular Italian salad with origins from Capri ( hence, it is called Insalata Caprese). It is famous for both its ingredients and the colors of the salad (the flag of Italy).

There are four basic ingredients in a basic Caprese salad.

The common ingredients in this salad include fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil and olive oil.
Think of this recipe as a caprese salad on top of a grilled mushroom.

By the way, I have made this recipe on an indoor grill.

I am a huge fan of indoor grills as they are easy to use and clean up and can also be used year round.
If you are planning on making this recipe on an indoor grill the cooking times may vary as that is the nature of indoor grilling.

  • Brush oil all over each mushroom and season as desired. Allow this to rest for 5-ten minutes.
