This is probably because French toast is usually made with bread that has been soaked in eggs.

How to Make Vegan French Toast

This recipe for Vegan French toast is a delicious and simple non-dairy version of a favorite breakfast or brunch meal.
I like that this vegan version of French toast can be served up just like the regular non-vegan version.

Have you tried my Banana Nut and Oatmeal Cookie recipe?

While that simple vegan recipe is technically for a ‘cookie’, it could actually be enjoyed and taken on the go as a ‘breakfast cookie’ since it is made with oatmeal and bananas.
This recipe for Vegan French Toast is less of an ‘on the go’ breakfast recipe and more of a ‘sit down and eat this while it is warm’ recipe.

This recipe is for anyone asking how do you make French Toast from scratch.

The usual French toast is made with bread that is soaked in eggs and possibly milk and then cooked on a griddle.
Certainly there are methods for making French toast taste better including adding some kind of extract for flavor or topping it with syrup.

However, as you may suspect ‘Vegan French Toast’ is made a bit differently from the ‘usual’ version.

Instead of soaking the bread in eggs and milk, we will use vegan-dairy alternatives instead.
But, we can still make this French toast taste even better by adding extra ingredients.

Because this is a vegan French Toast recipe, you are are probably wondering what is a substitute for milk in French Toast.

In a regular French toast recipe, the milk is whipped up with the eggs for the bread to soak in. Then, when the soaked bread is cooked, we get that ‘custard-like’ coated bread that is such a popular breakfast and bread choice.

Instead of regular cow milk, we will use a vegan alternative instead.

Using a nut milk, such as almond milk or cashew milk, is a safe way to go in this recipe.
However, subbing in a bit of coconut milk can really change up the flavor!

Here are some more great tips for you.

  1. ‘Normal’ French toast get get soggy when the bread is soaked in too much liquid (eggs+milk). This can still happen in vegan French toast. The desired consistency for any French is actually more dry than moist.
  2. Sometimes folks go into making a vegan recipe not taking into consideration the bread. If you are a strict vegan, use a vegan bread, that is, a bread not made with eggs or milk.
  3. Make this French Toast recipe even better by personalizing it. My choice is to cover my French toast with fruit and maybe some Maple syrup. However, a sprinkle of cinnamon or some date syrup can also work wonders with this recipe!

Are you wondering how do you fix soggy French toast?

Yes, oversoaking the toast can definitely make your French toast soggy.
So can not cooking it correctly.

Here is how to prevent soggy French toast.

Use extra dry bread- as in allow it to sit out overnight or toast it in the oven on a really low temperature first.
Also, resist the urge to soak each side of the toast for more than a couple of minutes.

How to cook French Toast.

Since we are making vegan pancakes, I suggest using nonstick skillet with possible a bit of canola oil heated before adding the toast.
Also, cook the French toast on low to medium heat flipping midway through cooking.
