    What to know about Babka

    What is Babka?

Babka is a sweet, yeasted bread that is often served as a dessert. This bread originated in Eastern Europe, particularly in Jewish communities.

Babka features dough that is first rolled out and then covered with a filling. It is then rolled up, split in half and twisted before baking.

What makes Babka different from other breads?

Babka is noticeably different from other kinds of bread because of its shape. Unlike other bread, babka features two halves, that have been twisted together to form one loaf, before baking.

Babka is usually served as a sweet dessert with chocolate and cinnamon being the classic fillings. However, these days the variations of babka include different flavors such as fruit preserves or pizza ingredients.

Tips for making babka with pizza dough.

The quickest way to make this recipe is to use a store-bought pizza dough. The dough should be soft, elastic, and easy to work with rather than using a premade crust that has already been formed.

Here are some more great tips for you.

    1. When rolling out your pizza dough, roll it out evenly making sure it's not too thin or too thick. Even thickness will help ensure that the layers of dough and filling are evenly distributed throughout the babka.
    2. It is a good idea to spread the sauce and pizza ingredients evenly to about a half inch of the edges of the dough. However, you should also avoid adding too many ingredients, as it can make it difficult to roll and shape the babka.
    3. When you go to roll up the babka, it is important that you roll it up tightly and pinch the dough together as you go. Start rolling the dough from the the longest side and be careful not to apply too much pressure as you roll because doing so cay cause the fillings to spill out.

    How to store Pizza Babka

To store your leftover babka you can wrap any leftovers well in foil or plastic wrap. If properly stored, it should keep for up to three days in your refrigerator and up to a month frozen (certain toppings can affect the storage however) .

Pizza Babka Twist Bread, an easy and delicious recipe for pizza dough stuffed with toppings and then baked as a babka. Vegan or Vegetarian

    About this Pizza babka recipe.

Pizza babka is a both a pizza and a twist bread. To make this recipe we will first roll out the dough and then add the pizza toppings before forming and baking the babka.

    How to serve babka pizza.

    • Serve this babka pizza warm with several dipping sauces on the side (pizza sauce, marinara sauce, or olive oil for example).
    • This pizza babka goes great as a side dish with soups, salads, or even a pasta dish.
    • Or you can serve this babka for breakfast or brunch with fresh fruit, yogurt, or a selection of spreads like cream cheese or hummus.

Ingredients needed to make Pizza Babka Twist Bread

    • Pizza Dough. You can use store-bought dough or make your own using a pizza dough recipe of your choice.
    • Sauce. Pizza sauce or marinara sauce work well.
    • Cheese. Vegetarians can use shredded mozzarella cheese. Vegans can use a vegan alternative cheese.
    • 'Toppings' - my pizza babka has olives, basil, and seasonings. It is best to not use too many toppings as doing so can make it difficult to roll and bake the babka.
    • Olive Oil. This is brushed over the babka before baking.

Expert Tip👉 If you are making a vegan babka pizza, make sure that your dough, sauce and other ingredients are also vegan.

How to make Pizza Babka Twist Bread

    • Start by preparing a loaf pan for nonstick. Brushing the pan with olive oil works fine for me.
    • Lightly dust a clean flat work surface with flour. Then, carefully place, unroll, or unpackage your dough on the area. Use a rolling pin to flatten the dough out to a rectangle that is about 12 inches by 18 inches. The thickness of the dough does not matter as long as the rectangle is the correct size and the dough is evenly rolled out.
    • Next, brush or spoon your sauce over the dough to about a half inch of the edges of the dough.
    • Evenly spread your remaining toppings, starting with the cheese (vegan if it can be baked), over the sauce.
    • To roll the babka up, starting from one of the longer sides (preferably closest to you), tightly roll the dough into a log. Then pinch the edges of the dough together.
    • Before placing the assembled babka into the pan for baking, you will need to slice the roll in half. Carefully use a sharp knife to slice the babka in half lengthwise.
    • To create the babka twist, twist the two babka halves together (it is easiest if you place one half over the other to create an "X" and then work your way out), keeping the cut side of each half exposed to reveal the layers of filling.
    • Transfer the twisted babka to your prepared loaf pan and brush it with olive oil. You can sprinkle on seasonings at this point as well.
    • Cover the babka with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel to let it rise until it becomes puffy and almost double in size (30-45 minutes).
    • When you are ready to bake the pizza babka, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Place the babka in the center of your preheated oven and bake until golden brown, about 40 to 50 minutes .
    • Lastly, allow the pizza babka to cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Expert Tip👉 Allowing the pizza babka to cool slightly before slicing and serving will help the filling set which can prevent it from oozing out.
