    Like with anything else, granola is as healthy as the ingredients that is put into it and the methods used to make it. This is one reason why many people like to make their own rather than purchase granola already made.

    When only healthy natural ingredients are used to make granola, you can expect the granola to be relatively healthy. However, this is when the granola is eaten in moderation 😉.

    What ingredients are used to make granola?


    Granola commonly has oats as the base of the ingredients. Vegan granola is usually made with maple syrup while non-vegan granola may be made with honey.

    Other common ingredients that are used to make granola include nuts, dried fruit, and spices such as ground cinnamon. Once the ingredients have been combined, they are baked until crisp.

    Rolled oats are used in this recipe. Quick oats are not recommended as they do not have the structure, like rolled oats, to hold when baked in this recipe.

    Here are some more great tips for you.

    1. Some folks prefer large chunks of granola as they are better for snacking on. However, other folks like those chunks to be minimal as the granola will be used as a topping or as part of another recipe. The choice is up to you.
    2. Adding dried fruit, such as raisins, is one way to make your granola even better. Other options include coconut flakes, alternative nuts such as peanuts, or even chocolate chips.
    3. After removing the granola from your oven it is important that you allow the granola to completely cool before 'disrupting' it especially if you prefer your granola chunky. However, if you are not a big fan of chunky granola, you can attempt to break it up while warm.

    How to store homemade granola.

    This homemade granola should be stored in an airtight container. If properly stored, it should however also keep for about two weeks or even longer if frozen.

    This is a simple recipe for homemade granola that is also vegan and gluten free.
    To make this recipe we will first combine the ingredients before slowly baking them until crisp.

    How to serve this homemade granola.

    • In a bowl with oat or almond milk for breakfast.
    • As a snack alone or with popcorn.
    • Also part of another recipe such as a topping for nice cream or a similar treat.

    Ingredients needed to make homemade granola.

    • Rolled Oats. Oats are used as the base for this recipe. Using rolled oats gives this granola that crunchy structure that we enjoy.
    • Walnuts. Really about any kind of nuts, or combination of nuts, can be used in this recipe. The nuts should be coarsely chopped.
    • Flax Seed. The flaxseed should be ground. Flaxseed is loaded with nutritional benefits including protein and fiber.
    • Maple Syrup. Using maple syrup is for both flavor and to hold the other ingredients together. If you are not a strict vegan, you can alternatively use honey.
    • Vegetable Oil. Any neutral oil will work in this recipe. The oil will help the granola get crisp.
    • Spices- this include cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, or even pumpkin spice.

    How to make this Easy Maple Walnut Granola Recipe

    Makes: about 2 quarts
    Prep time: 10 minutes
    Bake time: 40 minutes
    Total time: 50 minutes

    • Preheat your oven to 300 and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper
    • In a large bowl, use a fork or similar utensil to combine together the oats, walnuts, and flax.
    • Next, in a large measuring cup (like a three cup or bowl with a spout) , use a whisk to combine together the maple syrup, oil, and the spices.
    • Pour half of the liquid ingredients from the measuring cup of the ingredients in the bowl. Then toss the ingredients and then repeat with the remaining liquid.
    • Transfer the coated ingredients to your prepared baking sheet, evenly spreading the ingredients out over the baking sheet.
    • Bake for 30-40 minutes or until the ingredients brown and are crisp. There is no need however, to stir or shake the ingredients for this granola.
    • Lastly, when the granola is done baking, remove it from the oven and allow it to fully cool before removing it from the baking sheet.
    • Store in an airtight container and enjoy 🙂 . 

    Expert Tip👉 Use the parchment paper to help transfer the cooled granola to a storage container. Simple fold the parchment paper in half to make a crease in the center and then open the paper up to line your rimmed baking sheet for baking the granola.
