Frequently asked questions about oat milk.
Oat milk is not a dairy milk from an animal.
Instead, oat milk is considered to be a plant-based alternative to regular dairy milk.
Oat milk is made by combining it with water and then straining out the oats from the mixture. Additional flavors, such as sweeteners or extracts, can be added to the milk to make it taste better.
Oat milk can be enjoyed just as you would enjoy any other kind of milk. You can drink it as is, pour it over your cereal, or even add it to a recipe.
Because oat milk has a thicker consistency than other plant based milks, it is especially useful in baking. Also, oat milk makes for great tasting vegan ice cream.
Tips for making homemade oat milks.
Make sure that you are using rolled oats to make this milk recipe. Using quick oats can actually ruin the milk.
Here are some more great tips for you.
- Soaking the oats before making the milk is not required. However, allowing the oats to sit in water refrigerated overnight can soften them and thus, make this recipe easier for you.
- Using a strong blender to make this recipe is really a good idea as there is a bit of work done by the blender. I use a Vitamix for mine.
- Straining the oats is a really important step in this recipe. The best way to strain the oats is to allow them to strain naturally. You may need to repeat this step as needed especially if you want a less dense milk result.
How to store homemade oat milk.
Oat milk should be covered and refrigerated. If properly stored, it should keep for a few days. However, you can freeze your oat milk (tip: use an ice cube tray!).

Ingredients needed to make homemade oat milk.
Oat Milk (Yields 32 oz)
Prep time 6 minutes
- Rolled Oats. While steel cut oats could work in this recipe, quick oats will not.
- Water. You will need water to soak the oats in and then cold water to blend the oats with. Adding extra water can give you a more fluid and less creamy result.
- Flavorings such as sweetener, maple syrup, dates, honey, or even vanilla extract.
How to Make Homemade Oat Milk
- To soften your oats, place them in a jar or bowl and then cover them with water overnight. Then rinse the oats in a strainer under cold water. This is an optional, yet helpful, step.
- Combine together your ingredients in your blender and blend on high until well blended. It can take from 30 seconds if you have soaked your oats to a couple of minutes if you have not. However, do not over blend as doing so can break down the starch and cause a slime to develop.
- To strain the milk, place cheesecloth over a large bowl. Then pour the mixture over the cheesecloth and allow it to drain through on its own.
- Repeat the straining process as needed to get rid of any chunks or if your want a less creamy milk result.
- Store your oat milk in a covered jar in the refrigerator.
Expert Tip👉 Resist the urge to push the oat milk through the cheesecloth while straining. You do not want to chance any of the oats getting through the cloth and causing the milk to get slimy faster.
