Frequently asked questions about Mediterranean Diet Salads.

What is a Mediterranean Diet Salad?

A Mediterranean diet salad is made with ingredients that are friendly to the Mediterranean diet. These ingredients are low in fat, fresh and considered to be healthy.

Mediterranean diet salad ingredients often include:

🥬 Dark or darker green varieties of lettuce such as spinach leaves, Romaine lettuce, and arugula.
🥗 Vinaigrette dressing made with olive oil and seasonings.
🍏 Fresh fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, blueberries, and carrots.
🥜 Toppings in moderations such as nuts, seeds, and cheese.

What are the best kinds of apples to use in a salad?

Generally speaking, the best kinds of apple to use are the ones that add texture, flavor, and color to the salad. That is, apples that are fresh and crisp, add a flavorful balance to the salad, and have good color or add to the colors in the overall salad.

These apples can work well in a salad when sliced thin or in bite-sized pieces:

    🍎 Honeycrisp.
    🍏 Golden Delicious.
    🍎 Fuji.
    🍏 Granny Smith.
    🍎 Gala.

Tips for making a great tasting salad.

Using a variety of ingredients with flavors that both balance and compliment one another makes with salad a success. For this salad especially, your ingredients should be as fresh as possible for the perfect flavorings and crunch.

    More helpful tips for you.

    1. When selecting apples to use in this recipe, select crisp varieties that have different flavors. I like a honeycrisp or fuji (both reds) with granny smith (green) for this recipe.
    2. Sometimes, I like to add dried fruit to add color, texture, and flavor to this salad. Raisins, dried cranberries, or a mix of dried berries are my go-to choices.
    3. My favorite hack to use when I am in a rush is to use pre-bagged lettuce in a recipe like this one. For this I like a mix of spinach and romaine or a spring mix.

    How to store leftover salad.

This salad is best when made fresh and served. While you could refrigerate leftovers in an air tight container for up to two days, I would not add the dressing until the salad is served.
