The secret to using sweet and sour in a recipe is to use them in the right amounts.
That is, one should not overpower the other as the flavors are equally important.
What is sweet and sour made of?

How to make vegan sweet and sour sauce.
The sauce for this recipe is simple to make.
As mentioned, you will need to make sure that your ingredients are indeed vegan.
Combine together the following ingredients, except for the cornstarch and water as they are added later.
- Ketchup- ½ cup.
- Sugar-⅓ cup.
- White Vinegar- ¼ cup.
- Soy Sauce- ¼ cup.
- Cornstarch- 3 tablespoons (or additional as needed to thicken sauce).
- Water- 3 tablespoons (or as needed to thin out the sauce).
Vegan Sweet and Sour Tofu
Ingredients needed to make tofu in sweet and sour sauce.
Expert tip: This recipe uses small green, red, and yellow peppers. Purchasing a multi-pack of peppers can make this easier for you. Or, you can simply use the peppers of your choice.
- Sweet and Sour Sauce- recipe above.
- Oil- 3 tablespoons, divided. I use olive or a vegetable oil for this recipe.
- Garlic- 2 cloves. The cloves should be minced or chopped.
- Onion- 1 small (red preferred), chopped.
- Tofu- 1 pound extra firm. The tofu should be drained and diced. Simply place the tofu on clean paper or kitchen towel(s) to drain.
- Red Bell Pepper- 1 small, chopped into bite sized pieces.
- Green Pepper- 1 small, chopped.
- Yellow Pepper- 1 small, chopped.
- Pineapple- ½ cup or 4 slices, cut into pieces.
- Green Onion- 1 chopped or sliced for serving.
How to make Vegan Sweet and Sour Tofu
- Prepare the sauce as indicated above. Do not add the cornstarch and water however, as these will be added to the sauce later on.
- Place the tofu on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels to drain will you work (about 15 minutes). The tofu should be diced into 1" cubes before adding it to this recipe.
- Heat a large skillet on medium heat with two tablespoons of the oil. Add the garlic and sauté for two minutes or until fragrant. Add the chopped red onion and continue to sauté. When the onion is soft (about two minutes) you can turn off the heat. You can transfer this to a large bowl.
- In another skillet, we will cook the tofu until brown. Heat the remaining oil on medium heat and add the tofu. Stir the tofu as needed until the tofu is golden brown. You can transfer the browned tofu to the bowl with the other cooked ingredients. You can also add the chopped pineapple to the large bowl at this point.
- Lastly, we will make the sauce. In a small pot or saucepan, combined all of the sauce ingredients except for the cornstarch and water. Heat the ingredients on medium heat and use a whisk or spoon to stir this as it heats. When the ingredients begin to bubble you can whisk in the remaining ingredients. When the sauce has thickened you can remove it from the heat and toss it with the ingredients in the bowl.
- Top with the chopped green onion and serve this over rice or as desired.
