Frequently asked questions about cinnamon rolls.
Cinnamon rolls are rolls that feature the flavor of cinnamon and sugar.
Usually, these rolls are yeast leavened and are made using a sliced rolled dough which gives the appearance of a 'swirl' filling.
The swirl filling is made with cinnamon and sugar topping that is baked into the rolls. Then the rolls are served with an icing or glaze on top.
Most cinnamon roll recipes do contain dairy products.
Eggs and butter are the most common dairy ingredients that are added to a cinnamon roll recipe.
To make your cinnamon rolls vegan diet friendly, alternatives for eggs and butter should be used. Also, often the icing that is added to cinnamon rolls will contain milk, which means that an alternative for dairy milk should also be used.
Tips for making cinnamon rolls.
This is a yeast-based bread recipe which means you will need time to allow for the dough to rise. You can help the dough rise by placing it in a warm location while it rises (I place a clean cloth over mine and then place the rising dough on top of my refrigerator).
Here are some more great tips for you.
- Oat milk that is warm (about 115 degrees) works best in this recipe because of its texture. However, unsweetened nut milk and coconut milk can work as well (texture result may vary).
- The dough for these rolls can be prepared ahead of time. Simple cover the dough after the first rise and place it into your refrigerator for up to ten hours. Then, when you are ready to make the rolls, remove the rolls from your refrigerator and allow them to get to room temperature before continuing.
- Adding nuts or topping with a vegan icing are options that can work for these rolls. You can also serve them with a bit of maple syrup.
How to store vegan cinnamon rolls.
These rolls are really best when warm and fresh. However, you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days or freeze them for a couple of months.

Ingredients needed to make vegan cinnamon rolls.
There are three parts to this recipe. They are the rolls, the filling, and the topping.
For the rolls.
- Oat Milk. Your oat milk should be warm. You can microwave it for about a minute to a minute and a half to get it warm enough to use without being too hot.
- Yeast. Use instant yeast for this recipe.
- Brown Sugar. Make sure that your brown sugar is indeed vegan.
- Coconut Oil. Coconut oil works great for this recipe however, you can alternatively try using another vegan butter alternative.
- Flour. All purpose flour was used to make my rolls. However, you can try another similar flour, taking into consideration any binding needs.
Ingredients needed to make vegan filling for cinnamon rolls.
- Vegan Butter. Your vegan butter should be very soft, not melted.
- Ground Cinnamon.
- Light Brown Sugar. Again, make sure that your brown sugar is indeed vegan.
Vegan cinnamon roll topping ingredients.
- Vegan Butter. Vegan butter or cream cheese (for a thicker topping) can be used.
- Powdered Sugar. Alternatively, vegan brown sugar (as used on my rolls) can be used for a lighter topping.
- Vegan Milk. This is added to help get the consistency that you desire for the topping.
- Vanilla Extract. Just a small amount is added to enhance the flavor of your topping.

How to make vegan cinnamon roll dough.
- If you have not done so yet, heat your soy milk to a temperature that is like a warm bath. Then combine the warm soy milk with the yeast and brown sugar for about five minutes to proof.
- Meanwhile, prepare a clean flat work surface, dusted with flour, for kneading the dough. Also, lightly grease a bowl that can be used to hold the rising dough in.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine together the coconut oil and flour. Then add the yeast mixture from the first bowl and stir until the ingredients begin to come together. When the dough is able to pull away from the bowl, transfer it to your prepared work surface and knead it until it is smooth and 'stretchy' (about six minutes).
- Then, transfer the dough to your greased bowl, cover the bowl lightly with a clean kitchen towel, and allow the dough to double in size (about an hour).
Expert Tip👉 You can assist the rising process by placing the bowl on top of your refrigerator or in an oven that had been heated to the lowest possible temperature and then turned off (prop the door about an inch).
How to assemble vegan cinnamon rolls.
- Start by preparing a clean work surface with dusted flour to work on. Also, prepare a square baking pan for nonstick.
- Transfer your dough to your clean work surface and use a rolling pin to roll it out to about a third to half inch in thickness in the shape of a rectangle..
- Use the back of a spoon or pastry brush to brush to apply the softened vegan butter over the rolled dough to about a half in from the edges of the dough. In a small bowl, use a whisk or fork to mix together the ground cinnamon and brown sugar. Then evenly sprinkle this over the vegan butter that you spread over the dough.
- To roll out the dough, start with the rectangle side closest to you (mine was done with the short side of the rectangle), carefully roll the dough into a log. Then place the log with the seam side down.
- Use a serrated (bread) knife to slice the dough into nine evenly sized rolls. Place each of the rolls into the prepared baking pan so that your can see the swirls facing up towards you.
- Cover the rolls with plastic wrap let the rolls double in size again. You could skip this stem but, for fluffier rolls, I would do it.
- Preheat your oven to 350, remove the plastic wrap, and bake the rolls for 22-25 minutes or until the begin to turn golden on top.
- While the rolls are cooling you can prepare the topping. Simply combine the topping ingredients, adjusting as needed to reach your desired consistency. Then, after your rolls have cooled for at least five minutes at room temperature, you can add the topping. Allow the topping to sit on top for another five minutes before serving.
Expert Tip👉 If you line your workspace with parchment paper, you can use the parchment paper to easily move the rolled out dough around as needed.
